We stopped by the OATSystems booth at RFID Journal Live! 2013. OAT, a division of Checkpoint, specializes in asset-tracking enterprise systems for a variety of industries including apparel, aerospace and healthcare. Kapil Asher, Pre-Sales Engineer at OAT, demonstrated some cool capabilities of the OATxpress RFID asset tracking system. The solution creates a ‘visual factory’ at manufacturing sites and has helped aircraft manufacturers ATK and Bell Helicopter, among others, streamline their warehouse operations.
OAT’s web browser-based software solution shows a map of production area zones in a manufacturing facility and the number of assets in each location. With OATxpress software, RFID-tagged assets, and RFID portal readers at zone entry/exit points, assets are tracked as they move from one production area to another. The software also offers some more specific use case capabilities.
For heavy manufacturing plants that need to keep counts of specific assets, OAT software has the capability to cycle count by product. This allows the reader to only register specific tags and update the system for those intended tags. Kapil demonstrates this by searching for ‘all tools’ in the ‘maintenance room’. The software expects to find 10 tags and reads only those items while ignoring tags on any other equipment.
Another use case of the software is the item locator, which is helpful to track down one specific item in a massive manufacturing plant. Using a handheld reader, Kapil shows us how the software and reader behave like a metal detector, beeping louder and more frequently as he gets closer to the item.
