North York General Hospital Increases Medication Deliveries and Accuracy with RAIN RFID System

Hospitals all over the world try to provide the best care possible. However, providers face a challenge in trying to reach their goals while reducing potential costs. Hospitals strive to reach many benchmarks, including increased operational efficiency and excellence in patient care. Organizations want to reach these benchmarks without overhauling their current systems in the process. Utilizing the Impinj platform and RAIN RFID, healthcare providers may achieve their goals with minimal impact to their existing processes.

North York General Hospital (NYGH), one of the largest community academic hospitals in Toronto, Canada, deals with thousands of patients every day. In the fast-paced medical environment at NYGH, excellent patient care relies on quick and efficient distribution of pharmaceuticals. Without the ability to track supplies, eliminate errors, and ensure accuracy, NYGH might struggle to reach its goals for its patients.

In order to improve the complicated process of medication distribution, NYGH implemented a RAIN RFID system. Built on the Impinj platform and developed by MEPS Real-Time Inc., NYGH’s RAIN RFID solution resulted in a drastic increase in saved labor hours, reduced manual errors and increased accuracy for deliveries.

NYGH has reduced medication tray-restocking times by an average of 4.9 minutes, resulting in 659 labor hours saved annually. To achieve these results, a unique ID number is encoded into a RAIN RFID tag to identify a number of different characteristics, including name, dose, expiration date, and lot numbers. This information is quickly read by the MEPS Real-Time Inc. Intelliguard Kit and Tray Management System to ensure every medication is properly loaded onto the tray.

After six months of successful results, representatives of NYGH announced at the 2015 Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists’ Banff Seminar that they had achieved 100 percent accuracy during tray restocking events. With a RAIN RFID system from Impinj and MEPS now in place at NYGH, medical efficiency and patient care are greatly enhanced.
